Book Clubs begin!

Students started work today on their new book clubs! While schedules will vary over the coming weeks, students should ALL read chapter 1 by Thursday.
Parents: I suggest that you look at your student's reading calendar so that you know what their individual reading assignments will be over the next several weeks.
So excited to talk about books with you all on Thursday!

Coming soon: Book Clubs

Today we talked about upcoming book clubs. Students made selections of which book they would like to read for the next several weeks - should be fun!
No homework. However, several students have work they need to make up as the end of term approaches. I spoke with those students individually today. I need revised work by Monday in order to be able to put it into my gradebook for this term. Please ask your student if there is anything they need to revise and help them to work on it.
Enjoy the weekend

More great presentations

Thanks to all who presented today - it was wonderful to see such excellent student work.
In 7A, we had the chance to look at some issues raised from last night's homework. Tonight for homework, you need to add to what you had written last night based on today's discussion. Add insights concerning specific rights such as clothing, women's rights, the death penalty, and physical punishment.
7B did not get to this part of today's activity. No homework.

Book Projects!!

It's great to see all the excellent work students produced while I was at Jekyll Island with sixth grade! Such creative projects!
If students did not have a completed project today, I expect to see it tomorrow. This will lose them 5 points, but, if it's perfect, they still have the chance to earn an A.
For homework tonight, students should complete the reading called The Women of Afghanistan and write out thoughtful answers to the questions. They have tonight as well as Reading and Work Time tomorrow to work on this. We will discuss it in class tomorrow.

Book Projects due TOMORROW!

Hi all!
Sorry it's been so long since I posted. My three days at Jekyll Island with the 6th grade were exciting, exhausting, and educational. I'm definitely ready to get back to school.
Just a reminder that book projects are due tomorrow. Come to class prepared to either present your project or display it in a museum walk.
I look forward to seeing you all after such a long break and seeing what you have created!

Last chapter

Today we finished The Breadwinner. It seems that some problems were solved and some left unresolved. Some students seemed unsatisfied with the ending. Good thing they'll get the chance to change it if they want to...
Which brings us to BOOK PROJECTS!!
Today we briefly discussed book projects. These are a student's chance to shine creatively and show off their knowledge of the book at the same time.
To get started on this, students need to complete a book reflection tonight. This is part of the book project grade and shows knowledge of each of these different ideas.
Tomorrow we will look at the rubric and plan out what needs to be done in order to succeed on this assignment. Here is a list of sample project ideas that students may choose from, or propose their own. We will see examples and discuss what excellence looks like tomorrow.
Then, tomorrow we will complete this planning sheet to think about how to make their project the best it can be.
See you tomorrow for a day of creativity!

Parent Volunteers needed!

Parents:
Humanities night is fast approaching. On Thursday, March 4 ALL students at ACMS will be required to come to school to show off what we've been up to in Language Arts and Social Studies this year.
That night will also feature a bake sale organized by sixth grade students to support recovery and development efforts following the earthquake in Haiti.
We need parent volunteers to help bake and facilitate students and parents as we showcase work. If you are able to help out, please email me at lglowienka@atlantachartermiddle.com
Thanks for your consideration!

Afghan tea party

Thanks to all who brought in food and other presentations today. What a fun day in 7th Grade Language Arts!
We have no homework over the weekend. See you Monday for the end of The Breadwinner.
For extra credit over the weekend, please write a thank you letter to the wonderful woman who baked our nan: Nazifa Garib of Alosta Bakery.
This link will lead you to a recipe for the yummy Afghan Yogurt Soup with Tomatoes that Cassie shared with us.

Afghan party - tomorrow!

Today we read Ch. 13 and 14 of The Breadwinner. Tomorrow we finish the book!
Tomorrow we will be enjoying a small Afghan party with naan and tea. Very exciting! Students have the option of bringing in extra credit to enhance their jigsaw grades from last week. Hopefully we will hear some insightful presentations tomorrow.

Monday, February 1, 2010

We spent today discussing last week's presentations - what went well and what we could improve for next time.
Tomorrow we will continue reading The Breadwinner!
